The Slime Fighter
Updated 5/7/07

I decided to try the slime fighter.  It is an air oil separator that attaches to the the breather hole on the accessory case. The separator cost $100 and the adapter $20.  the adapter is a 45 degree elbow from a plumbing supply store that has been ground down to accommodate a wrench.  It could and should be home made for $2.  The bad news is it does not fit.  The above picture shows how the engine mount prevents the unit from being in a vertical orientation.  The separator needs to be close to vertical to allow the oil to run back into the engine.   I was the first RV-8 customer, but I am told it fits and works well on the RV-4,6,and 9 models.  George, the designer is being very helpful  and we are working on a new adapter to make the unit fit.......

For now, the unit is not installed. (See update Below)

4/6/02 -- Finally installed a modified unit in line on the breather tube. (Pictures Above)  Craig and George,  the designers were helpful patient  in their multiple design iterations to reach a solution.  I am happy with the fit and installation of the unit now.  There is still a fair amount of oil making its way through the unit to the belly, but it does seem to help reduce the mess a little.  More info will be posted as the unit accumulates more flight hours......

After 5 years an hundreds of hours of flight the verdict is in......

The Slime Fighter does not work.  After any flight, especially long ones, I have a little puddle of oil under the plane after it sits for a while.  Inspection shows most of the oil is coming right through the Slime Fighter and out of the oil breather tube.  There is also a fair amount of oil on the belly of the plane from in flight accumulation.   To be fair, I do have some oil leaking from the prop governor, but the breather tube is the biggest contributor.  Oh, well.....

Belly after 50 hours is soooo oily there are drips of oil coming off ther rudder.  Puddle of oil after just one long flight
